A tooth that has cracked, worn down, or been weakened by a large old filling can make every meal feel uncertain. If you live in Camarillo and have been chewing on one side, or noticing a chip that seems to grow, a dental crown may be the restoration that gives you back a tooth you can rely on. At 805 Dentistry, we help patients from Camarillo and across the region understand their options clearly before any treatment begins.

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the entire visible portion of a damaged tooth. It restores the tooth's shape, size, and function while protecting what remains of the natural structure underneath. Because a crown surrounds the tooth instead of filling a small area, it can support teeth that are too compromised for a standard filling.

Crowns are one part of the restorative and cosmetic care we provide as a general and family practice led by Dr. Dar Radfar. Our office includes an on-site dental lab, which keeps the crafting of your restoration closely connected to the team caring for you. Camarillo families can also handle much of their other dental care in one place.

Patients come to us for crowns for several distinct reasons. One of the most common is a cracked tooth, where a crown holds the tooth together and helps prevent the crack from spreading. Another is a tooth with a large, aging filling that no longer leaves enough healthy structure to stand on its own.

Crowns also play an important role after other treatment. A tooth that has had root canal therapy often needs a crown to protect it afterward. Crowns sit on top of dental implants to replace missing teeth, and they anchor bridges. Some patients choose crowns for cosmetic reasons, to reshape a misshapen or discolored tooth as part of a broader smile improvement.

Am I a good candidate for a dental crown?

You may be a good candidate if you have a tooth that is cracked, broken, heavily worn, or weakened by decay or a large filling. The best way to know is an exam, where we look at the tooth closely and review imaging to understand what is happening beneath the surface.

Sometimes a different restoration makes more sense. A smaller area of damage might be better treated with a filling, inlay, or onlay, which preserve more natural tooth. When a tooth sits too low at the gumline to hold a crown securely, our team can perform crown lengthening first. We walk Camarillo patients through these possibilities so the choice feels informed rather than rushed.

What happens during the crown process?

The process typically begins with an exam and preparation of the tooth, followed by placement of your finished crown. Here is what you can generally expect:

  • A thorough exam and imaging to evaluate the tooth and surrounding area
  • Numbing the area so you stay comfortable during preparation
  • Gently shaping the tooth to make room for the crown
  • Taking impressions so your crown can be crafted to fit your bite
  • Placing a temporary crown, when needed, to protect the tooth in the meantime
  • Fitting, adjusting, and securing your permanent crown

If dental visits make you anxious, we offer sedation options, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation, and a board-certified dental anesthesiologist is part of our team. For an urgent situation such as a suddenly broken tooth, we also offer emergency dental appointments.

How do I care for my crown afterward?

You care for a crown much like a natural tooth: brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with regular cleanings and exams. Although the crown itself does not decay, the tooth underneath and the gums around it still need attention, especially where the crown meets the gumline.

It is wise to avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or other very hard objects that can damage any restoration. If you clench or grind your teeth, ask us about a night mouth guard, since our practice has a strong focus on TMJ treatment and can help protect your crowns and natural teeth. Let us know if your bite ever feels off or the crown feels loose.

How can I pay for a crown?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and many plans provide coverage for restorative treatment like crowns. Our team can help you understand how your benefits apply before you commit to care.

We also welcome self-pay patients, and financing is available for those who would like to spread out the cost. Camarillo patients ready to protect a damaged tooth can contact our office to schedule an exam and talk through both treatment and payment in plain terms.
