Gum problems tend to show up in ordinary moments: a little blood in the sink after brushing, a tooth that suddenly looks longer than its neighbor, or food that keeps wedging into the same spot. When deeper cleanings and good home care are no longer enough to keep the gums and supporting bone healthy, periodontal surgery gives us a way to treat the problem at its source. At 805 Dentistry in Thousand Oaks, our board-certified periodontist provides this care in the same office where your family already receives everyday dental care.
Periodontal surgery is a group of procedures that treat the gums and the bone that hold your teeth in place. Gum disease often begins below the gumline, where pockets form and bacteria collect in places a toothbrush and a routine cleaning can't reach. For many patients, we start with scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning of the root surfaces. When pockets remain too deep or tissue has already been lost, a surgical approach lets us reach and treat those areas directly.
The specific procedure depends on what we find. Gum grafting can cover roots exposed by receding gums. Periodontal regeneration and bone grafting are used to help rebuild support that disease has worn away. Crown lengthening and gingivectomy reshape gum tissue, either to make room for a restoration or to correct uneven tissue. Cosmetic gum contouring addresses a "gummy" smile or an irregular gumline. Each of these procedures has its own purpose, so our first priority is understanding what your gums need.
Patients come to us for periodontal surgery for several different reasons. These are some of the most common situations we see:
- Gum disease that has continued to progress after a deep cleaning
- Receding gums that leave roots exposed and sensitive
- A tooth that needs a crown but has too little visible structure above the gumline
- Bone loss that has to be addressed before a dental implant can be placed
- An uneven or excessive gumline that affects how a smile looks
Because our periodontist also places dental implants and provides implant maintenance, a patient who has lost a tooth to gum disease can often move from treating the gums to replacing the tooth without being sent elsewhere. Our team also performs sinus lift surgery and full arch implant treatment, so we can plan larger cases as a whole.
Am I a good candidate for periodontal surgery?
The only reliable way to know is a thorough periodontal evaluation. During that visit, we measure your gum pockets, check for recession and loose teeth, and use imaging to assess the bone. Our office offers 2D and 3D imaging, including CBCT, which shows the supporting bone in detail.
Your overall health, how your gums have responded to earlier treatment, and your goals all affect the recommendation. Some patients do well with nonsurgical care and regular periodontal maintenance visits. Others benefit more from surgery. You don't need a referral to see our periodontist. If dental visits make you anxious, our board-certified dental anesthesiologist offers nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia, and we'll talk through which option suits you.
What is recovery like, and how do I protect my results?
Recovery depends on the procedure, and we give you specific aftercare instructions before you leave. Most aftercare focuses on keeping the treated area clean without disturbing it, following the eating guidance we provide, and keeping your follow-up appointments so we can check how the tissue is healing.
How long your results last depends largely on what happens afterward. Gum disease is a chronic condition, so ongoing periodontal maintenance visits and steady home care play a major role. Since general dentistry and periodontics are under one roof, your regular cleanings and your specialist follow-up stay coordinated instead of being split between offices.
How can I pay for periodontal surgery?
We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and we welcome self-pay patients. Periodontal treatment at our office is filed with insurance as specialist care, so coverage can differ from routine visits. Our team will review your benefits with you before treatment begins.
Financing is also available if you'd like to spread out the cost. We'll go over your treatment plan and your payment options clearly, so you can make decisions without surprises.
How do I get started?
