Most cavities in kids and teens don't start on the smooth sides of teeth. They start in the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where food and bacteria settle into spots a toothbrush can't fully reach. Dental sealants are a simple preventive step we use to close off those grooves. At 805 Dentistry in Thousand Oaks, we place sealants as part of the everyday family care we provide for patients of all ages.

A sealant is a thin protective coating that we apply to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, the molars and premolars. These teeth have natural pits and fissures that help with grinding food. Those same pits can also trap debris that brushing misses. Once the sealant bonds to the tooth, it creates a smoother surface that is easier to keep clean.

Sealants are part of our broader approach to preventive dentistry, alongside routine exams, cleanings, cavity detection, and fluoride treatment. They do not replace brushing, flossing, or regular checkups. They add one more layer of protection in the place where decay most often begins. Dr. Dar Radfar and our team decide on sealants tooth by tooth, based on what we see during your exam.

Families come to us for sealants in several common situations. Most often, a parent asks about them when a child's permanent molars first come in. Sometimes we recommend them because a tooth has especially deep grooves. Other times a family simply wants to be proactive about prevention.

  • A child's first permanent molars have recently erupted
  • A preteen or teen's second molars are coming in
  • A tooth has deep pits and fissures that tend to collect plaque
  • An adult has healthy back teeth with deep grooves and no existing fillings

Our pediatric care serves children roughly ages 4 to 14, and parents are welcome to stay in the treatment room. That makes a big difference for younger kids getting sealants for the first time. Because we treat children and adults under one roof, siblings and parents can often keep their checkups on the same family schedule.

Can adults get dental sealants too?

Yes, adults can be good candidates for sealants when their back teeth have deep grooves and no decay or fillings on those surfaces. Sealants are most often associated with children, but the need for them comes from the shape of the tooth, not the patient's age.

During an adult exam, we look closely at each chewing surface. If a tooth already has a cavity, a sealant isn't the right tool, and we would discuss a dental filling or another restoration instead. If the surface is healthy but deeply grooved, a sealant may be a reasonable preventive option. We'll explain our reasoning either way so you can make an informed choice.

How do I care for sealants once they're placed?

You care for sealed teeth the same way you care for the rest of your teeth: brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with your regular cleanings and exams. Sealants don't need any special products or routines.

We do check your sealants at every routine visit. Over time, chewing can wear a sealant down or loosen part of it. Catching that early lets us repair or reapply the coating before the groove is left unprotected. Sealants also work best alongside other habits, so we may talk with you or your child about snacking patterns, sugary drinks, and whether a fluoride treatment makes sense. If you ever notice that a sealed tooth feels rough or different when you bite, mention it at your next visit or give our office a call.

Does insurance cover sealants, and what if I don't have insurance?

Many dental plans include preventive services, and we accept all major PPO insurance plans. Our team can help you understand how your specific plan handles sealants before treatment, so you aren't guessing about your costs.

If you don't have dental insurance, you are still welcome here. We see self-pay patients, and we offer financing for families who would like to spread the cost of care over time. Sealants are often planned alongside a cleaning and exam. Reviewing everything together gives you a clear picture of your options before we begin.

How do I schedule a sealant visit for my family?

The easiest way to start is to book a routine exam. During that visit, we'll evaluate whether sealants make sense for you or your child. Our office is in Thousand Oaks, and we regularly see families from Newbury Park, Westlake Village, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Camarillo, Agoura Hills, Oak Park, Calabasas, Ventura, Oxnard, West Hills, and Woodland Hills.

If your child's new molars have just come in, or you simply want to take a practical step toward fewer cavities, we'd be glad to help. Call 805 Dentistry to schedule a visit. Our team will walk you through what we find and what we recommend for your family.
