A cracked molar that twinges when you bite down, a tooth that has just had a root canal, or an old filling that has grown too large for the tooth around it can all lead to the same question: what will protect this tooth from here? For many of our patients, the answer is a dental crown. At 805 Dentistry in Thousand Oaks, we place crowns for children and adults alike, and we help patients understand exactly why a crown is being recommended before any work begins.

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gumline. A filling repairs one area of a tooth. A crown surrounds the tooth completely, holding it together and restoring its shape so it can handle everyday chewing again. Because it encircles the tooth, a crown spreads biting forces across the whole structure instead of concentrating them on weakened walls.

Crowns are among the most versatile tools in restorative dentistry. We use them to strengthen damaged teeth, to finish teeth after root canal therapy, as part of bridges that replace missing teeth, and on top of dental implants. Because our office has an on-site dental lab, much of the work of shaping and fitting a restoration can be coordinated close to home rather than routed through outside facilities.

Patients usually come to us for a crown for one of several distinct reasons. Each calls for a slightly different approach:

  • A cracked or fractured tooth that needs to be held together before the crack spreads
  • A tooth treated with a root canal, which often benefits from added protection afterward
  • Extensive decay or a large failing filling that leaves too little natural tooth for another filling
  • A worn, discolored, or misshapen tooth that needs both strength and an improved appearance
  • A missing tooth, where crowns may anchor a bridge or top an implant

Some of these situations are planned well in advance. Others arrive unexpectedly, such as a tooth that breaks during a meal. Because we offer emergency dental appointments, we can see patients promptly when a damaged tooth can't wait.

Am I a good candidate for a crown?

If a tooth is damaged but still has a healthy root and enough supporting structure, you may be a good candidate for a crown. During your exam, Dr. Dar Radfar evaluates the tooth, the surrounding gums, and your bite. We then explain whether a crown, a smaller restoration like an inlay or onlay, or another option makes the most sense.

Sometimes a tooth needs preparation before it can hold a crown. If the tooth is broken near the gumline, a crown-lengthening procedure performed by our board-certified periodontist may expose enough tooth structure for the crown to fit securely. If the nerve inside the tooth is infected or inflamed, root canal therapy may come first. Having these services within one practice means you don't need to coordinate between multiple offices. For patients who feel nervous about dental work, we offer several sedation options, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation, through our board-certified dental anesthesiologist.

How do I care for my crown, and what results can I expect?

Caring for a crown is much like caring for your natural teeth: brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with regular cleanings and exams. The crown itself does not decay, but the tooth underneath and the gums around it still can. Careful cleaning along the gumline matters most.

It also helps to be mindful of habits that put extra stress on teeth, like chewing ice or using your teeth to open packaging. If you grind or clench at night, a custom night guard can help protect your crown along with the rest of your teeth. Our team's experience with TMJ concerns lets us look at the bigger picture when bite forces are part of the problem. With good daily care and routine visits, a crown lets you chew comfortably and smile with confidence. We'll monitor it at each checkup to make sure it continues to fit well.

How can I pay for a dental crown?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and many plans include some coverage for crowns when they are needed to restore a damaged tooth. Our team can help you understand how your benefits apply before treatment begins.

If you don't have insurance, we welcome self-pay patients. We also offer financing for patients who prefer to spread the cost over time. We'll talk through your options openly so cost doesn't stand between you and a healthy tooth.
