Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy

A toothache rarely waits for a convenient moment. It can interrupt sleep, make a morning coffee unbearable, or turn a family dinner into something to endure. When the problem lies deep inside a tooth, root canal therapy is often what lets you keep that tooth and get back to normal life. At 805 Dentistry in Thousand Oaks, we treat front teeth, premolars, and molars, and a board-certified endodontist is part of our team.

Root canal therapy treats the soft inner tissue of a tooth, called the pulp, when it becomes damaged or infected. We carefully clean out the affected tissue, disinfect and shape the canals inside the root, and then seal them. The goal is simple: preserve your natural tooth instead of removing it. Many people put off care because they expect the procedure itself to be the hard part. In reality, it is usually the trouble inside the tooth that causes the discomfort, and treatment is what addresses it.

Patients come to us for many different reasons. Some arrive with a sudden, throbbing ache. Others have a tooth that cracked while they were chewing, a front tooth injured during a fall or a game, or a tooth that was treated years ago and is bothering them again. Our endodontics team handles all of these situations:

  • Cracked teeth that have exposed or irritated the inner pulp
  • Traumatic dental injuries, such as a blow to the mouth during sports or an accident
  • Root canal retreatment for a previously treated tooth that needs attention again
  • Urgent pain, with same-day emergency appointments available

The type of tooth shapes how we approach treatment. An anterior root canal treats a front tooth, such as an incisor or canine. These teeth usually have a single root and canal, which tends to make treatment more straightforward. Because front teeth are so visible, we also pay close attention to how the tooth will look afterward.

A premolar root canal treats the teeth between your canines and molars. Premolars can have one or two canals, so they fall in the middle in terms of complexity. A molar root canal treats the large back teeth that do most of your chewing. Molars often have three or more canals, and some are narrow or curved, so the work tends to take more time and precision. In every case, our endodontist evaluates the tooth's anatomy before treatment so the plan fits that specific tooth.

Am I a good candidate for root canal therapy?

You may be a candidate if a tooth has damaged or infected pulp but enough healthy structure remains to save it. The only way to know for sure is an exam. Our practice includes oral and maxillofacial radiology, with 2D and 3D imaging and CBCT scans, which help us see the roots and surrounding bone clearly. When a standard root canal is not the best fit, we can discuss alternatives we also provide, including apicoectomy, extraction, and tooth replacement options such as implants or bridges.

You do not need a referral to see our endodontist, so you can call us directly. If dental anxiety has kept you away, our board-certified dental anesthesiologist offers nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. We are also a family practice, so other family members can be seen in the same office, and we welcome patients from Simi Valley, Camarillo, Westlake Village, Newbury Park, and nearby communities.

What should I expect after treatment?

Most patients return to their normal routines quickly, though the treated tooth may feel tender for a short time. We will give you aftercare instructions specific to your tooth. These often include being gentle with that side of your mouth until the tooth is fully restored and keeping up with brushing and flossing.

Back teeth, especially molars, often need a crown after a root canal to protect them during chewing. Front teeth may need a different kind of restoration, depending on their condition. Our on-site dental lab helps us coordinate your restoration within our own office. Regular cleanings and exams afterward let us keep an eye on the treated tooth along with the rest of your smile.

How can I pay for root canal therapy?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and welcome self-pay patients. Coverage depends on your individual plan, and our team is happy to help you understand your benefits before treatment begins.

We also offer financing for patients who prefer to spread out the cost. Saving a natural tooth is often a worthwhile investment, and we will explain your options openly so cost does not keep you from the care you need.

If a tooth is aching, cracked, or injured, please don't wait for it to get worse. Call 805 Dentistry to schedule a visit or request a same-day emergency appointment. We look forward to helping you feel comfortable again.
