A dental crown covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance when a filling alone is no longer enough. If you live in Ventura and have been told a tooth needs a crown, or you suspect one might, our team at 805 Dentistry can walk you through your options. We are based in Thousand Oaks and welcome Ventura patients who want a single office that can handle their crown and the rest of their family's dental care.

A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth. Once it is placed, it becomes the tooth's new outer surface, protecting what remains underneath and letting you bite and chew more comfortably. We use crowns as part of our restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry services, depending on what each patient needs.

Crowns are useful in many situations. A tooth with a large cavity or an old, failing filling may not have enough healthy structure left to hold another filling. A cracked tooth may need a crown to hold it together. After root canal therapy, especially on a molar, a crown often protects the treated tooth. Crowns can also sit on top of a dental implant or anchor a bridge that replaces missing teeth, and they can improve the look of a tooth that is badly discolored or misshapen.

Patients from Ventura often tell us they value having many kinds of care under one roof. In addition to our general dentists, our practice includes a board-certified endodontist, a board-certified periodontist, and a board-certified dental anesthesiologist. If your tooth needs a root canal, crown lengthening, or another procedure before it can receive a crown, that care can often be coordinated within our practice instead of through separate offices.

We also have an on-site dental lab, which helps our team stay closely involved in how your restoration is made. For patients who feel nervous about dental work, we offer several sedation options, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. And because we offer emergency dental appointments, a Ventura patient with a broken tooth has a place to call.

Do I need a crown, or will a filling work?

It depends on how much healthy tooth structure remains, and an exam is the only way to know for sure. A small area of decay can usually be repaired with a filling. When damage is more extensive, a filling may not hold up under everyday chewing, and a crown offers more complete protection.

During your visit, we examine the tooth and take digital images as needed. Our practice offers 2D and 3D imaging, including CBCT, which can give us a clearer view of the tooth and surrounding bone. In some cases, an inlay or onlay may be a more conservative choice than a full crown. We will explain what we see and why we are recommending a particular treatment so you can decide with confidence.

What happens during the crown process?

Getting a crown involves preparing the tooth, recording its shape, and then placing the finished restoration. Here is what you can generally expect:

  • An exam and imaging to evaluate the tooth and its roots
  • Any necessary preliminary care, such as treating decay, a root canal, or crown lengthening
  • Gently reshaping the tooth so the crown fits securely
  • Recording the shape of the tooth so your crown can be custom made
  • Fitting, adjusting, and bonding the final crown in place

Your tooth is numbed before preparation, and if anxiety is a concern, we can talk about sedation ahead of time. Throughout the process, we check your bite and the fit of the crown so it feels natural when you chew.

How do I care for my crown afterward?

You care for a crown much like a natural tooth: brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with regular checkups. The crown itself cannot get a cavity, but the tooth underneath can still develop decay where it meets the gumline, so cleaning that area matters.

If you grind or clench your teeth, ask us about a night guard, since grinding can wear on both natural teeth and restorations. Our practice also has a strong focus on TMJ treatment, so if jaw pain or clicking comes up, we can evaluate it. Routine cleanings and exams let us check your crown along with the rest of your smile.

How can I pay for a dental crown?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, welcome self-pay patients, and offer financing. Many PPO plans include some coverage for crowns, though benefits vary from plan to plan.

Our team will review your treatment plan and estimated costs with you before we begin, so there are no surprises. If you have questions about your coverage or would like to learn more about financing, we are glad to help. Ventura patients are welcome to contact 805 Dentistry to schedule an exam and find out whether a crown is the right next step for your tooth.
