Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ/TMD) Therapy in Ventura

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ/TMD) Therapy in Ventura

If you wake up with a sore jaw, hear a click every time you chew, or feel your jaw catch when you yawn, you're likely wondering whether it's something a dentist can help with. For many people, it is. At 805 Dentistry, Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ/TMD) therapy is one of our main areas of focus. We welcome patients from Ventura who want clear answers about jaw pain and a practical plan to address it. Our Thousand Oaks office brings together orofacial pain care, advanced imaging, and general dentistry under one roof, so Ventura patients don't have to piece together care from several different offices.

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, one on each side, just in front of your ears. They work every time you talk, chew, swallow, or yawn. When the joint, the surrounding muscles, or the way your teeth come together stop working smoothly, the result is often called TMD, or temporomandibular disorder. TMJ therapy is the care we provide to evaluate those problems and ease them.

Our office includes an orofacial pain service that treats TMJ disorders directly. That covers jaw clicking, locking, and limited movement, as well as chronic facial pain. It also includes persistent pain with no identified dental cause. You don't need a referral to schedule an evaluation, which makes it simpler for Ventura patients to get started.

Patients come to us for different reasons, and the right approach depends on which situation fits you. Some notice clicking or popping when they open wide. Others have a jaw that locks partway open or closed. Some simply find they can't open their mouth as far as they used to.

Another common group deals with headaches that seem to start in the jaw or temples, and we evaluate jaw-related headaches as part of our orofacial pain care. We also see patients who have had a toothache-like pain checked elsewhere, only to be told nothing is wrong with the tooth. Pain with no clear dental source is exactly the kind of problem we're set up to look into. Because our practice also focuses on sleep apnea, we pay attention to how nighttime habits and sleep may connect with what you're feeling during the day.

What happens during a TMJ evaluation?

A TMJ evaluation starts with a conversation about your symptoms, followed by a hands-on exam and, when needed, imaging. We want to know when the pain began, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects eating, speaking, and sleep.

Imaging is where our setup stands apart. We have a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist on staff who evaluates TMJ imaging. We also provide CBCT imaging along with 2D and 3D dental imaging, which lets us look closely at the joint and surrounding structures rather than guess. Here is what Ventura patients can generally expect:

  • A detailed review of your symptoms and health history
  • An exam of jaw movement, joint sounds, and the surrounding muscles
  • 2D or 3D imaging, including CBCT, when it would help clarify the problem
  • A discussion of findings in plain language
  • A treatment plan built around your specific situation

Once we understand what's driving your discomfort, we explain your options and answer questions before anything moves forward. For some patients, part of the plan may involve a night mouth guard, which we offer. Others need a different approach, and we'll be direct about what we think makes sense.

What does aftercare look like?

Aftercare focuses on follow-up visits and daily habits that support your jaw between appointments. TMJ problems often develop over time, and managing them is usually an ongoing process rather than a single visit.

We'll talk with you about what to watch for and how to care for any appliance we provide. We'll also cover when to check back in with us. If your symptoms change, we can reassess and adjust your plan. Because we're a full-service practice for the whole family, your routine cleanings and exams can happen in the same office that manages your TMJ care. That keeps everything coordinated for Ventura patients who'd rather not juggle multiple providers.

How can I pay for TMJ therapy?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, we welcome self-pay patients, and financing is available. Coverage for TMJ care varies from plan to plan, so our team will help you understand your benefits before treatment begins.

If you're paying on your own, we'll walk through the costs of your recommended plan up front. Financing can help spread payments out so cost doesn't keep you from addressing ongoing pain. Dr. Dar Radfar and our team are glad to help Ventura residents find relief from jaw discomfort. When you're ready, reach out to schedule an evaluation.
