When a tooth is lost or removed, the jawbone that once held it can gradually shrink. Over months and years, that lost volume can make it harder to place a dental implant, support a bridge, or keep a denture stable. Bone grafting rebuilds that foundation. At 805 Dentistry, our Thousand Oaks office regularly welcomes patients from Ventura who want to replace missing teeth but have been told their bone may not be ready yet. We help them understand their options and plan a clear path forward.

Bone grafting is a procedure that adds bone or bone-like material to areas of the jaw where natural bone has thinned or been lost. Over time, the body uses the graft as a framework to build new bone, which creates a sturdier base for future treatment. The procedure is most often part of a larger plan, such as preparing a site for dental implants, preserving bone after an extraction, or supporting other restorative work.

The need for grafting can come from several situations. A Ventura patient may have had a back tooth pulled years ago and now wants an implant there. Another may have lost bone because of advanced gum disease. Others are planning full-arch treatment, such as All-on-4 or All-on-X implants, and need certain areas reinforced. For implants in the upper back jaw, where the sinus sits close to the bone, a related procedure called a sinus lift can add height so an implant has enough support.

Our practice is set up so that much of the planning and treatment can happen under one roof. We offer CBCT imaging and 2D and 3D dental imaging, and a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist is on our staff. These detailed scans help us see bone height, width, and nearby structures before we recommend a graft, so you can understand what is happening beneath the surface.

A board-certified periodontist on our team performs periodontal regeneration, gum grafting, and implant placement, and we have an on-site dental lab for restorative work. Led by Dr. Dar Radfar, DDS, we aim to be a one-stop shop for the whole family's dental care. For Ventura patients, that can mean fewer separate offices to coordinate and a more connected experience from your first scan to your final restoration.

Am I a good candidate for bone grafting?

You may be a good candidate if you are missing one or more teeth and do not currently have enough jawbone to support the treatment you want. The best way to know is an exam and imaging, which show exactly how much bone is present and where it is needed.

Patients commonly considered for grafting include those who:

  • Want dental implants but have thin or shallow bone at the implant site
  • Are having a tooth extracted and want to preserve bone for future replacement
  • Have experienced bone loss related to gum disease
  • Need added bone height in the upper back jaw before implants
  • Are planning full-mouth or full-arch implant treatment

Your overall oral health matters too. If gum disease is present, we may recommend treating it first with services such as scaling and root planing. Our periodontics team accepts patients without a referral, so you can schedule a consultation directly.

What happens during the procedure, and is it uncomfortable?

Most patients are numbed with local anesthesia, and we also offer sedation for anyone who feels anxious. Our board-certified dental anesthesiologist provides nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia, so we can match your comfort level to the procedure.

During treatment, the area is gently opened, the graft material is placed where bone is needed, and the site is closed so healing can begin. Sometimes grafting happens at the same visit as an extraction. In other cases, it is a separate step before an implant. Before you begin, we will explain which approach fits your situation and what timeline to expect.

How should I care for the area afterward?

Plan to follow the specific instructions we give you, because they are tailored to the type of graft you receive. In general, that means keeping the area clean, avoiding pressure on the site, and attending your follow-up visits so we can check how the area is healing.

Healing takes time because the body gradually builds new bone around the graft. Once the site is ready, we can move forward with the next step in your plan, such as placing an implant. If anything feels off while you are healing, reach out to us. Our office offers emergency dental appointments.

How can I pay for bone grafting?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and we welcome self-pay patients. Coverage for grafting varies by plan, so our team can help you understand your benefits before treatment begins.

We also offer financing, which lets many patients spread out the cost of a larger treatment plan. If you live in Ventura and are exploring implants or tooth replacement, contact 805 Dentistry to schedule a consultation. We will review your imaging, answer your questions, and help you decide on the right next step.
