A back molar with a large old filling and one cracked cusp is a common reason people start asking about onlays. The damage is too extensive for another filling, but much of the tooth is still strong and healthy. For our patients in Ventura, an onlay often fits that middle ground. It restores the damaged portion of the tooth while preserving as much natural structure as possible. At 805 Dentistry, we place onlays as part of our restorative care for Ventura families who want a durable repair without removing more tooth than necessary.

An onlay is a custom-made restoration that rebuilds the chewing surface of a tooth and covers one or more of its cusps, the raised points that do much of the work when you bite. An inlay fits within the grooves between the cusps. A crown covers the entire visible tooth. An onlay sits between the two, which is why it is sometimes called a partial crown.

Because an onlay is made outside the mouth and then bonded into place, it can restore a larger area than a filling typically can. Our office has an on-site dental lab, which keeps fabrication of restorations within our practice. For Ventura patients, the main advantages of an onlay include:

  • Preserving healthy tooth structure that a full crown would require us to reshape
  • Reinforcing a weakened tooth so it can handle everyday chewing
  • A custom fit designed around the shape of your own tooth and bite
  • A natural-looking result that blends with the surrounding teeth

Onlays are often a good option when a back tooth has more damage than a filling can reliably repair but not enough to need a full crown. Common examples include a molar with a cracked or broken cusp, a premolar with decay reaching one of its points, and a tooth whose large old filling is wearing down or failing. In each case, an onlay replaces only what is compromised.

Not every tooth is suited to an onlay. If damage extends across most of the tooth, a crown may offer better protection. A tooth with an infected nerve may first need root canal therapy, which our practice also provides. Healthy gums and supporting bone matter too, so we look at the whole picture during your exam. We serve children and adults, and Dr. Dar Radfar will explain whether an onlay, inlay, filling, or crown makes the most sense for your tooth.

What happens during the onlay process?

The onlay process usually begins with an exam and imaging to see how far the damage goes. We then remove decay or the failing filling, shape the tooth to receive the restoration, and record its exact form so the onlay can be made to fit. While your custom onlay is being made, a temporary restoration protects the prepared tooth.

At your next appointment, we remove the temporary, check the onlay's fit and how it meets your bite, and make any needed adjustments before bonding it securely into place. We take our time with this step, because an onlay that sits correctly against your opposing teeth feels natural when you chew. If dental visits make you nervous, we offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. Many Ventura patients find these options make it easier to complete treatment they have been putting off.

How do I care for my onlay, and how can I pay for it?

You care for an onlay much like your natural teeth, with thorough brushing twice a day, daily flossing, and regular cleanings and exams. Pay attention to the edge where the onlay meets the tooth, since plaque can collect there. If you grind or clench at night, ask us about a night mouth guard, which can help protect both your restoration and your natural teeth. Avoiding habits like chewing ice or biting hard objects also helps.

During routine visits, we check the onlay along with the rest of your mouth to catch any changes early. If something feels different, such as a rough edge or a change in your bite, contact us. Because we offer emergency dental appointments, Ventura patients have a place to turn if a problem comes up unexpectedly.

For payment, we accept all major PPO insurance plans and work with self-pay patients as well. Coverage for onlays varies from plan to plan, so our team can help you understand your benefits before treatment begins. Financing is also available, which lets many patients spread out the cost instead of delaying care for a tooth that needs attention.

As a family, general, and cosmetic practice, we handle a broad range of care in one place, from cleanings and fillings to crowns, inlays, and onlays. Families in Ventura can keep their dental needs with a team that knows their history. Contact 805 Dentistry to schedule an exam and find out whether an onlay is the right way to restore your tooth.
