A cracked molar, a tooth that has had a large filling replaced more than once, or a tooth that still feels fragile after a root canal can all leave you chewing carefully on one side. For many of our patients from Agoura Hills, a dental crown is how we restore that tooth so it looks natural and handles everyday eating again. At 805 Dentistry, our Thousand Oaks office provides crowns as part of complete family and restorative care. We want you to understand each step before you commit to anything.

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gumline. A filling repairs one area of a tooth. A crown surrounds the whole tooth instead, which holds weakened tooth structure together and protects it from further damage. Because it is shaped and shaded to match your surrounding teeth, a well-made crown blends into your smile.

Crowns help in a wide range of situations. We often recommend one for a tooth with decay too extensive for a filling, a cracked or broken tooth, or a tooth that has had root canal therapy. Crowns also cover dental implants, anchor bridges that replace missing teeth, and improve the shape or color of a tooth when cosmetic bonding or veneers are not the right fit. Your first visit with us starts with a dental exam and imaging so we can see what is happening beneath the surface and decide whether a crown is the best choice for that tooth.

Restoring a damaged tooth usually lets you keep your natural root. That matters, because a tooth left untreated can weaken to the point where extraction becomes the only option. Agoura Hills families also appreciate that we see children and adults, so different family members can have their care handled in one place.

Here is what a crown can do for a compromised tooth:

  • Protect a weakened, cracked, or root canal–treated tooth from breaking further
  • Restore comfortable chewing and biting on that side of your mouth
  • Improve the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth
  • Support a bridge or cover a dental implant as part of tooth replacement

Our office also has an on-site dental lab and in-house specialists, including a board-certified endodontist and a board-certified periodontist. If your tooth needs a root canal or a crown-lengthening procedure before it can hold a crown, we can often coordinate that care within our practice instead of sending you elsewhere.

What happens during the crown process?

The crown process typically takes more than one visit. It begins with preparing the tooth and ends with placing your finished crown. At the preparation appointment, we numb the area, remove any decay, and gently reshape the tooth so the crown can fit securely over it. We then capture the shape of your tooth and its neighbors so the crown is made to fit your bite, and we place a temporary crown to protect the tooth in the meantime.

When your permanent crown is ready, we check its fit, color, and bite before bonding it in place. We make adjustments until it feels natural when you close your teeth together. If dental visits make you anxious, please tell us. Our board-certified dental anesthesiologist offers nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia, so we can match the level of comfort to what you need.

How do I care for my crown afterward?

You care for a crown much like a natural tooth, with daily brushing, flossing, and regular checkups. The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can still develop problems at the edge where the crown meets the gum. Cleaning that area carefully every day is important.

While you wear a temporary crown, avoid very sticky or hard foods and chew gently on that side. After your permanent crown is placed, keep up with routine cleanings and exams so we can check both the crown and your gum health over time. If you grind or clench your teeth, ask us about a night guard to help protect your restoration. If a crown ever feels loose or breaks, call us. We offer emergency dental appointments.

How can I pay for my crown?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, welcome self-pay patients, and offer financing. Before treatment begins, we review your options so you know what to expect. Many dental plans include coverage for restorative care, and our team can help you understand how your benefits apply.

If you are paying out of pocket or your coverage leaves a balance, financing can spread the cost into manageable payments. Agoura Hills patients are part of the communities our practice serves, and we would be glad to help you protect a damaged tooth.
