You notice a small white patch on the side of your tongue while brushing, or a sore inside your cheek that still hasn't healed after a couple of weeks. Maybe your hygienist pointed out a bump on your gums during a routine cleaning. Most of these changes turn out to be harmless, but a visual exam alone can't always tell. An oral biopsy gives a clear answer. At 805 Dentistry in Thousand Oaks, we perform oral biopsies right in our office, so you can get answers without being sent across town.
An oral biopsy is a procedure in which we remove a small sample of tissue from an area of concern in the mouth so it can be examined under a microscope. Depending on the size and location of the area, we may remove a small portion of it or, for smaller spots, the entire area. The tissue is then studied closely so we can understand exactly what it is and decide on next steps.
Biopsies help a wide range of patients. Common reasons include red or white patches, sores that don't heal, lumps or thickened tissue, unexplained changes on the gums, tongue, lips, palate, or floor of the mouth, and findings that show up on X-rays or 3D scans. Because we offer oral cancer evaluations and oral cancer screenings, a biopsy is often the next step when something deserves a closer look. Recommending a biopsy does not mean something is wrong. It means we want certainty instead of guesswork.
You don't need a referral to see us. If you've noticed a change in your mouth, you can call our office directly and schedule an evaluation. We also work with other dental and medical providers. Outside offices can send us digital clinical images, and we accept biopsy specimens collected elsewhere. We also provide second-opinion pathology reviews for patients who want another expert look at a diagnosis.
Imaging is often part of a thorough evaluation. Our oral and maxillofacial radiology services include 2D and 3D imaging, including CBCT imaging, and our board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist interprets scans for oral pathology. Seeing what's happening beneath the surface helps us plan the biopsy and understand the full picture.
Will the biopsy hurt, and what if I'm nervous?
Most patients find the procedure very manageable because we numb the area thoroughly before we begin. You may feel some pressure, but the goal is for you to stay comfortable throughout.
If dental visits make you anxious, tell us. Our board-certified dental anesthesiologist offers several options for patients with dental anxiety:
- Nitrous oxide for light relaxation that wears off quickly
- Oral sedation for a calmer, more relaxed experience
- IV sedation for deeper relaxation
- General anesthesia when it's the right fit for your needs and health
We'll talk through these choices with you before your appointment so you know what to expect and can decide what feels right.
How do I take care of the area afterward, and when will I know my results?
We send you home with specific aftercare instructions for your biopsy site, and following them closely is the most important thing you can do. Your instructions may cover how to manage any tenderness, what to eat while the area heals, and how to keep the site clean without disturbing it.
Every biopsy is different, so we tailor guidance to the size and location of the area we treated. If anything feels unusual while you're healing, call our office. We also offer emergency dental appointments when a concern can't wait. Once the tissue has been evaluated, we review the findings with you in plain language, explain what they mean, and talk through any recommended next steps. As a full-service practice offering general dentistry, periodontics, oral surgery, and other specialties, we can often coordinate follow-up care in the same office you already know.
How do I pay for an oral biopsy?
We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and our team files claims on your behalf. Our oral and maxillofacial pathology services are billed as specialist care, which can affect how your plan covers the visit. We're happy to help you understand your benefits before your appointment.
If you don't have dental insurance, we welcome self-pay patients, and financing is available to help spread out the cost. We'd rather you get a clear answer about a concerning spot than put it off because of cost, so ask us about the options that fit your situation.
