Root Canal Therapy in Calabasas

Root Canal Therapy in Calabasas

You notice it first when you sip your morning coffee: a sharp, lingering ache in one tooth that doesn't fade as quickly as it should. Maybe it throbs at night, or the gum nearby looks a little swollen. For many of our Calabasas patients, that kind of pain is a sign that the soft tissue inside a tooth needs attention, and root canal therapy is often the way we save that tooth. At 805 Dentistry, our Thousand Oaks office welcomes families from Calabasas and nearby communities who want this care handled thoughtfully, clearly, and under one roof.

Root canal therapy treats the pulp, which is the soft inner tissue of a tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. When that pulp becomes inflamed or infected, often from deep decay, a crack, or an injury, it can cause pain and may affect the surrounding bone. During treatment, we gently remove the affected pulp, clean and shape the inner canals, and seal the space to protect it.

The goal is to keep your natural tooth rather than remove it. Many Calabasas patients come to us expecting an extraction and are relieved to learn that saving the tooth may be an option. Keeping your own tooth helps preserve your bite and the natural look of your smile. Benefits include:

  • Addressing the source of tooth pain caused by inflamed or infected pulp
  • Preserving your natural tooth and the bone around it
  • Helping avoid the need for tooth replacement down the road
  • Restoring the tooth for everyday chewing, often with a crown made with support from our on-site dental lab

We offer root canal therapy for molars, premolars, and anterior (front) teeth. The overall approach is the same, but each tooth type has its own anatomy, and that shapes how we plan your care.

Anterior root canals treat the front teeth, which usually have a single canal. These teeth are often involved after a fall, a sports injury, or other trauma, and appearance matters a great deal here, so we plan the final restoration with your smile in mind. Premolar root canals treat the teeth between your canines and molars, which may have one or two canals. Molar root canals treat the large back teeth that handle most of your chewing. Molars typically have three or more canals, sometimes with curved or narrow passages, so this treatment tends to be the most detailed. Back teeth also take heavy biting forces, which is why we often recommend a crown afterward to protect them.

Am I a candidate for root canal therapy?

You may be a candidate if the pulp inside your tooth is inflamed or infected but the tooth itself can still be saved. Common signs include lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, pain when biting, swelling or tenderness in the gums, or darkening of a tooth after an injury.

We also treat cracked teeth and traumatic dental injuries, and we perform root canal retreatments when a previously treated tooth needs attention again. In some cases, a minor surgical procedure called an apicoectomy may be considered. Our board-certified endodontist is on staff, and you don't need a referral to see us. We use 2D and 3D imaging, including CBCT imaging, to get a clear view of the tooth's roots and canals before recommending a plan.

What happens during treatment and recovery?

Treatment begins with a careful exam and imaging, followed by local anesthetic to numb the area. We isolate the tooth, create a small opening, remove the affected pulp, clean and shape each canal, and then fill and seal it. Many teeth then receive a crown to restore strength and function.

If dental visits make you anxious, we can help. Our board-certified dental anesthesiologist offers options including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. And when tooth pain can't wait, we offer same-day emergency appointments, which many Calabasas families appreciate when a problem strikes unexpectedly.

After treatment, some tenderness for a few days is common. We'll walk you through aftercare, which typically includes avoiding chewing on the treated tooth until it's fully restored, keeping up with brushing and flossing, and returning for your crown or final restoration as recommended. If anything feels off, simply call our team.

How do I pay for root canal therapy?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and we welcome self-pay patients as well. Because our endodontic care is filed with insurance as specialist care, our team can help you understand how your plan applies before treatment begins.

Financing is also available for patients who prefer to spread out costs. We'll review your options openly so you can make a confident decision. Whether you live in Calabasas or a neighboring community, we're here to help you protect your natural smile, so reach out to schedule a visit.
