Wisdom Teeth Removal in Calabasas

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Calabasas

A dull ache in the back of the jaw, gums that feel tender when you chew, or a dentist mentioning that your X-rays show something crowded behind your molars: these are common moments when Calabasas patients start asking about their wisdom teeth. At 805 Dentistry, we help teens, college students, and adults figure out what is happening back there and what to do about it. Because we handle imaging, surgery, and sedation within our own practice, families from Calabasas can work through the whole process with one team.

Your first visit begins with a conversation and a careful look. We ask about any pain, swelling, or pressure you have noticed, review your dental history, and examine the back of your mouth. Many people have no symptoms at all and come in because a previous dentist flagged a concern. That is a perfectly good reason to schedule, and you do not need a referral to see us.

Next comes imaging, which is where much of the real planning happens. We offer 2D and 3D dental imaging, including CBCT imaging, and we have a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist on staff who interprets scans for impacted teeth. A 3D view shows us how each wisdom tooth is angled, whether it has fully erupted, and how it sits relative to neighboring teeth and surrounding structures. With that information, we can explain your situation in plain terms and recommend a plan that fits it.

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars, and they usually arrive later than the rest of your teeth. Sometimes they come in without trouble. Often, though, there is not enough room. A tooth may stay trapped below the gumline, push sideways against the molar in front of it, or break through only partway. Our imaging helps us tell these situations apart.

Your plan depends on what we find. A wisdom tooth that has fully erupted may be a candidate for a simple extraction. A tooth that is impacted or partially covered by gum or bone typically calls for a surgical extraction. Some patients need all four removed, while others need only one or two. Common reasons to consider removal include:

  • Pain or pressure in the back of the jaw
  • Gum tissue that repeatedly becomes sore or swollen around a partially erupted tooth
  • Crowding or pressure against the neighboring molars
  • Difficulty cleaning the back teeth thoroughly
  • Imaging that shows a tooth growing at a problematic angle

Will I be awake during wisdom teeth removal?

That depends on your preference and on what your procedure involves, because we offer several levels of comfort. Our practice includes a board-certified dental anesthesiologist, and the options include nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. If dental visits make you anxious, tell us. Anesthesia for patients with dental anxiety is one of the services we provide.

During your consultation, we talk through which option suits your case, your health history, and your comfort level. Some patients having a straightforward extraction feel at ease with nitrous oxide. Others with impacted teeth or significant nerves prefer deeper sedation. Whatever you choose, we explain beforehand how to prepare, including whether you will need someone to drive you home afterward.

What happens on the day of my procedure?

On treatment day, we confirm your plan, review your sedation choice, and make sure you are comfortable before we begin. For a simple extraction, the tooth is loosened and removed. For a surgical extraction, we gently access a tooth that sits beneath the gum or bone and remove it with care for the surrounding tissue. Because your plan was built from detailed imaging, there are fewer surprises once we begin.

Once the teeth are out, we let you rest until you are ready to head home. Before you leave, we go over aftercare with you and whoever is accompanying you, so the instructions are clear even if you are still a little groggy from sedation.

How do I take care of myself after wisdom teeth removal?

Follow the specific instructions we give you, and contact us if anything concerns you. We walk you through eating, keeping the area clean, and managing discomfort during the first several days, and we tailor that guidance to the number of teeth removed and the type of extraction you had.

You are not on your own if something does not feel right. We offer emergency dental appointments, so Calabasas patients have a team to call during healing. Because we are a family practice treating children and adults, we can also keep caring for your smile after recovery with routine cleanings, exams, and anything else your family needs.

How can I pay for wisdom teeth removal?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and we welcome self-pay patients as well. Our team can help you understand how your coverage applies to your treatment before you commit to anything.

If you are paying out of pocket or want to spread out the cost, financing is available. We are happy to talk through the options during your consultation so you can plan for treatment with confidence. When you are ready, reach out to schedule your evaluation, and we will take it one step at a time from there.
