Oral Cancer Screening in Camarillo

Maybe you've noticed a sore in your mouth that hasn't healed, a patch that looks different from the tissue around it, or a lump you can feel with your tongue. Or maybe nothing seems wrong, and you simply want to know that everything looks healthy. Either way, an oral cancer screening is a straightforward way to get answers. At 805 Dentistry, we provide screenings for patients from Camarillo and throughout the surrounding communities, and we can carry out the next steps in our own office if something needs a closer look.
An oral cancer screening is a careful examination of the soft tissues of your mouth, face, and neck. We look for changes in color, texture, or shape that could signal a problem. The screening covers your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, the floor and roof of your mouth, and the back of your throat. We also feel along your jaw and neck for anything unusual.
For many patients, the screening is part of a routine dental exam, so you may not even realize it's happening. For others, especially Camarillo patients who come to us because of a specific concern, it is the main reason for the visit. Either way, the goal is the same: to notice changes early, while there are more options for addressing them.
Our practice includes an oral and maxillofacial pathology team that provides oral cancer evaluations and performs oral biopsies in the office. If we see an area that needs further study, we don't have to send you somewhere new to get it checked. We can take a small tissue sample here, and we also provide second-opinion pathology reviews for patients who want another set of eyes on an earlier finding.
We also have a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist on staff. We offer 2D and 3D dental imaging, including CBCT imaging, and our radiologist interprets scans for oral pathology. Having this expertise under one roof means fewer handoffs and a more connected picture of your oral health. Camarillo patients can see our pathology and radiology teams without a referral.
Who should get an oral cancer screening?
Nearly every adult benefits from regular oral cancer screenings, and they are especially important if you've noticed a change in your mouth. Because we see patients of all ages, screenings fit naturally into the care we already provide for Camarillo families during checkups.
You should schedule a visit sooner rather than later if you notice any of the following:
- A sore, ulcer, or irritated spot that doesn't heal
- A white or red patch on your gums, tongue, cheeks, or lips
- A lump, thickened area, or rough spot in your mouth or neck
- Ongoing tenderness, numbness, or discomfort without a clear dental cause
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving your jaw or tongue
Many of these changes turn out to have simple explanations. However, a professional evaluation is the only way to know for sure, and we would much rather check something that turns out to be minor than let a concern go unexamined.
What happens during the screening, and what comes after?
The screening itself is quick, painless, and requires no special preparation. We'll ask about any changes you've noticed and review your health history. Then we visually examine your mouth and gently feel the tissues of your mouth, jaw, and neck.
If everything looks healthy, we simply note your results and continue with your regular care. If we find an area of concern, we'll explain what we see in plain terms and talk through next steps. Those steps might include monitoring the spot, imaging, or an oral biopsy performed in our office. If you feel anxious about any procedure, we have a board-certified dental anesthesiologist on staff and offer options including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. There is no recovery time after a routine screening. If you have a biopsy, we'll give you clear instructions for caring for the area and let you know how and when we'll share your results.
How can I pay for an oral cancer screening?
We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and we welcome self-pay patients. Our team can help you understand your coverage before your visit so there are no surprises.
If you need additional care after a screening, such as a biopsy or imaging, we offer financing to help make treatment more manageable. We're happy to walk Camarillo patients through the available options and answer questions about costs at any point.
