A small sore, patch, or lump in the mouth that hasn't gone away usually turns out to be harmless, but looking at it can't tell you that for certain. An oral biopsy can. We remove a small sample of the tissue and examine it closely so you get a clear answer instead of an open question. Our Thousand Oaks office performs oral biopsies in-house, and Oak Park patients can come to us directly without a referral.

An oral biopsy is a short procedure in which we take a small piece of tissue from an area of concern in your mouth so it can be evaluated under a microscope. That area might be on your gums, tongue, cheek lining, lips, palate, or the floor of your mouth. The sample shows what the tissue actually is, which a visual exam alone cannot always confirm.

Our practice includes an Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology service that focuses on this kind of diagnosis. It performs biopsies in the office, provides oral cancer evaluations, and offers second-opinion pathology reviews. For families in Oak Park, that means the exam, the biopsy, and the follow-up conversation can all happen with one team in one place.

You may be a candidate for a biopsy if you have a spot in your mouth that hasn't healed on its own or doesn't have a clear explanation. Common examples include a sore that lingers, a white or red patch, a lump or thickened area, or tissue that looks different from the area around it. Sometimes we find something during a routine dental exam or oral cancer screening that we want to look at more closely.

A biopsy isn't only for something you can see. Our Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology service provides 2D and 3D imaging, including CBCT scans, and interprets scans for oral pathology. If imaging shows an area of concern, a biopsy may be the next step. We also accept biopsy specimens and digital clinical images from outside providers, so if your own dentist in Oak Park has already started the process, we can work with what they've gathered.

What happens during an oral biopsy appointment?

The appointment begins with an exam and a conversation about what you've noticed, then we numb the area and take the sample. Before anything starts, we look at the spot, review your health history, and explain what kind of biopsy makes sense for your situation. You'll know what we plan to do and why.

Here's what you can generally expect:

  • A review of your symptoms, how long the area has been present, and any changes you've noticed
  • A close exam of the tissue, with imaging if it would help
  • Local anesthetic to numb the area before we collect the sample
  • Removal of a small amount of tissue for evaluation
  • Clear instructions for caring for the site at home
  • A follow-up plan for discussing your results

If dental visits make you anxious, tell us. Our practice has a board-certified dental anesthesiologist on staff and offers nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia for patients with dental anxiety. We'll talk through which option, if any, fits you.

How do I care for the biopsy site afterward?

Follow the specific instructions we give you at the end of your visit, because they're based on where and how the sample was taken. Every biopsy site is a little different, so we go over your aftercare in person and answer your questions before you leave.

In general, be gentle with the area while it heals and pay attention to how it feels. If something seems off, or you have questions once you're home in Oak Park, call our office. We also offer emergency dental appointments, so you won't be left waiting if a concern comes up.

When will I get my results, and what comes next?

We'll explain the expected timeline for your results during your visit and schedule a time to go over them with you. Waiting can be stressful, so we make sure you know when to expect an answer and how we'll reach you.

When the results are in, we explain what they mean in plain language. If you need treatment, our practice offers a wide range of care, including oral surgery, periodontics, and restorative dentistry. That lets many patients continue with a team they already know. If your situation calls for care outside our office, we'll tell you so directly.

How can I pay for an oral biopsy?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, welcome self-pay patients, and offer financing. Our pathology service files insurance claims as a specialist. Our team can help you understand how that affects your coverage before your appointment.

If you don't have insurance or would rather pay directly, we'll walk you through your options. Financing can help spread out the cost so it doesn't get in the way of an answer you need.
