You've noticed a little sensitivity when you sip cold water, or your jaw feels tight when you wake up, or you simply can't remember the last time someone looked closely at your teeth. For many families in Ventura, that quiet uncertainty is the moment to schedule a dental exam. At 805 Dentistry, led by Dr. Dar Radfar, DDS, we treat each exam as a chance to understand the full picture of your oral health and talk through it with you clearly, without pressure.

A dental exam is a careful, hands-on evaluation of your teeth, gums, jaw, and the soft tissues of your mouth. During the visit, we look for early signs of decay, gum disease, worn or cracked teeth, and changes that may need a closer look. Because our team includes several specialties under one roof, a routine exam can also connect you directly with deeper care when you need it, without sending you elsewhere to start over.

We welcome Ventura patients of all ages, from young children to adults. Our office in Thousand Oaks serves Ventura along with many neighboring communities, so families can keep everyone's checkups in one place. Children ages 4 to 14 can be seen through our pediatric care, and parents are welcome in the treatment room.

Regular exams help us catch problems while they are smaller and simpler to address. Many issues, like early cavities or mild gum inflammation, cause no pain at first. A thorough exam gives us the opportunity to find them before they become uncomfortable or more involved to treat.

An exam with us can also include:

  • Cavity detection to identify areas of decay early
  • Oral cancer screening as part of reviewing your soft tissues
  • A review of your gums and supporting structures
  • Attention to jaw clicking, tightness, or headaches that may relate to TMJ
  • Discussion of snoring or sleep concerns, an area of strong focus for our practice

What happens during my first visit?

Your first visit begins with a conversation about your health history, any concerns you've noticed, and your goals for your smile. We want to understand what brought you in, whether that's a specific worry, a routine checkup, or a fresh start after time away from the dentist.

From there, we examine your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw. When imaging is helpful, we offer 2D and 3D dental imaging, including CBCT, and a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist is on our staff. If an area of tissue looks unusual, we can evaluate it further and perform oral biopsies in our office. We then walk you through what we found in plain language so you can make informed decisions.

What if I feel nervous about seeing the dentist?

Feeling anxious is very common, and we plan for it. We take time to explain each step before we begin, and you're always welcome to ask us to pause. Many patients find that simply knowing what to expect makes the visit feel much easier.

For patients with significant dental anxiety, we offer sedation options, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation, with a board-certified dental anesthesiologist on staff. These options are often most helpful when an exam leads to treatment, and we'll discuss together whether one of them makes sense for you.

What happens after my dental exam?

After your exam, we review any recommendations and help you prioritize them. If everything looks healthy, we'll typically pair your exam with a dental cleaning and set up your next preventive visit. If we find something that needs attention, such as a filling, gum treatment, a cracked tooth, or TMJ therapy, we can usually plan that care within our own practice.

At home, keep up with brushing, flossing, and any specific guidance we give you. Let us know right away if something changes before your next visit. We offer emergency dental appointments, so Ventura patients have a place to turn if a sudden problem comes up between checkups.

How can I pay for my dental exam?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and our team can help you understand how your coverage applies to your exam and any follow-up care. We also welcome self-pay patients who don't have dental insurance.

If you need additional treatment after your exam, financing is available to help spread out costs. We're happy to go over your options before any work begins, so you can move forward with confidence. Reach out to our team to schedule your dental exam and see how we care for Ventura families.
