Inlays in Ventura

A cavity or old filling that has grown too large for a simple filling, but not so large that the tooth needs a full crown, often sits in between. An inlay is made for that middle ground. It is a custom-made restoration that fits inside the grooves of a back tooth, between its cusps, and restores the tooth while keeping as much of your natural structure as possible. At 805 Dentistry, we place inlays for patients of all ages, and we are glad to welcome Ventura families who want thoughtful, conservative restorative care from one practice.
An inlay is a single, solid piece shaped to match the area of a tooth that has been lost to decay or damage. A filling is placed soft and hardened inside the tooth. An inlay is made outside the mouth to the exact shape of the prepared space, then bonded into place. Because it is made as one precise piece, it can be a strong option for the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars, where biting forces are greatest.
Inlays are part of a larger set of restorative options we offer, including fillings, onlays, and crowns. An onlay is similar to an inlay but extends over one or more cusps of the tooth, while a crown covers the entire visible tooth. Having all of these options in one office means we can recommend the restoration that fits your tooth's actual condition, without pushing you toward a more extensive treatment than you need.
Patients from Ventura come to us for inlays for several different reasons. One of the most common is a cavity in the center of a back tooth that is too large for a dependable filling. Another is an older filling that has worn down, cracked, or developed decay around its edges and needs to be replaced with something more durable. Some patients have a tooth with moderate damage and want to avoid reshaping the whole tooth for a crown.
Inlays can also be part of a broader plan. If you are restoring several teeth at once, or working toward a full mouth rehabilitation, an inlay may be the right choice for one tooth while a different tooth needs an onlay or crown. During your dental exam, we use cavity detection and imaging to look closely at each tooth before making a recommendation.
What are the benefits of choosing an inlay?
The main benefit of an inlay is that it repairs damage while preserving healthy tooth structure. Because an inlay fits within the cusps, we generally do not need to remove as much of the tooth as we would for a crown. Patients often appreciate this when they want to keep their natural teeth for as long as possible.
Other advantages patients value include:
- A precise, custom fit made to the shape of your tooth
- A conservative approach compared with a full crown
- A single, solid restoration suited to chewing surfaces
- Coordination with our on-site dental lab for careful communication between our team and the lab
Your exam will help us decide whether an inlay is the best fit or whether a filling, onlay, or crown would serve the tooth better.
What happens during the inlay process?
The inlay process begins with an exam and imaging so we can see the extent of the decay or damage. On the day of treatment, we numb the area, remove the decayed or failing material, and shape the space so the inlay can fit securely. We then capture the shape of the prepared tooth so the restoration can be made to match it.
The inlay is then made to those exact specifications, and our on-site lab helps keep that process closely connected to our clinical team. Once it is ready, we check the fit and your bite, make any needed adjustments, and bond the inlay into place. If dental visits make you anxious, ask us about sedation. We offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation, and a board-certified dental anesthesiologist is part of our team.
How do I care for my inlay, and how can I pay for it?
You care for an inlay much as you care for your natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss daily around the restored tooth, and keep up with regular dental cleanings and exams so we can check the inlay and the surrounding tooth. If you grind or clench your teeth, ask us about a night guard to help protect your restorations. Teeth grinding is also connected to TMJ concerns, an area our practice focuses on.
We want cost to be clear and manageable. We accept all major PPO insurance plans, welcome self-pay patients, and offer financing so you can move forward with care when you need it. Our team will review your options before treatment begins. If you are in Ventura and have a tooth that needs more than a filling, contact 805 Dentistry to schedule an exam and talk with us about whether an inlay is the right fit.
